Spring Cleaning can be a Good Cure for Spring Fever

By Megan Holmes

Concrete and blacktop can crack due to winter weather. It is important to repair these cracks because water that finds its way into cracks will soften the ground underneath and cause more cracking. Now that the weather is finally warming up spring fever has taken hold. Along with spring fever comes spring cleaning. Take a Saturday to inspect and fix things around the house. A little time spent on these tasks now may save you a lot of money in the future.

OUTDOOR TASKS

Roof and Gutters - The first thing to check is the roof and gutters. Look for warping, aging, moss and missing shingles. After such a hard winter there may be water and ice damage to repair. The gutters should be cleaned and downspouts inspected. If you find small piles of sand near your downspouts this means that your shingles are wearing out.

Sidewalks and Driveways - Concrete and blacktop can crack due to winter weather. It is important to repair these cracks because water that finds its way into cracks will soften the ground underneath and cause more cracking.

Windows and Doors - Wooden windows and doors may stick with the warm wet weather. They may need to be removed and shaved down. It is very important not to shave too far because then they will rattle when the wood shrinks again. Everyone wants to have their windows open in the spring, but before you do you must inspect the insulation and remove storm windows. All upper story windows should be cleaned and screens should be installed.

Paint and Touch Ups - Exterior paint on doors, moldings, fences, window frames and sashes, and fixtures should be touched up. Inspect or treat exterior wood for splintering, decay and insect damage. Rusty fixtures such as gate latches and mailboxes should be lubricated.

Yard and Gardens - Now is the time to fertilize your lawn. It is also a good time to mulch, remove dead plants, and cut back any trees or shrubs from the exterior of the house.

INDOOR TASKS

Appliances - Replace your smoke and fire alarm batteries. Inspect the exhaust duct and damper of your clothes dryer. Replace lamp, appliance, and extension cords that are frayed or damaged. It is also a good idea to clean the kitchen exhaust hood and air filter.

Heat and Air Conditioning - Clean or replace your air filters and remove all dust from grills and ducts. Check for rust and scale in your furnace and check for odd sounds or smells. If something seems wrong call in a qualified professional.

Fireplace - Clean out fireplaces and wood stoves. If there is creosote buildup or blockages it is best to have a chimney sweep come and clean it out.

Plumbing - Check all your water supply lines for dripping and leaks. Also check the shutoff valve at each plumbing fixture to make sure they function. Test the pressure relief valve in hot water heaters. It may be a good time to drain a few gallons from the bottom of the tank to reduce the buildup of scale.
