Do not think that bathroom remodels have become all form and no function. According to an article by Greg Udelhofen in Qualified Remodeler, "Water conservation is a critical concern in the design of shower valves, wash basins, tubs, toilets and bidets." Also, as the population ages people are concerned about making the bathroom accessible to all people regardless of age, size, or physical ability. "The key is to do so without designing a bathroom that has a sterile institutional look. Manufacturers and bathroom designers are well aware of the demand for user-friendly fixtures, like grab bars, shower seats, slip-resistant flooring, tubs and showers that are easy to get in and out of, and products that are easy to reach and operate."

Small bathrooms and powder rooms are getting a second look because they are most likely the bathroom that guests will be using. You should allow this small room to be as elegant or cozy as the surrounding floor. There are many ways to add space and openness to a small bathroom.

One space saving trend was pulled straight from industrial restrooms. Wall-hung toilets can save at least 4 inches of space and can clear the floor making it easier to clean and very attractive. Sensor faucets also de-clutter a small countertop.

Skylights and vaulted ceilings give the impression of space as well and light colors and the use of mirrors. One accessory that many people don't pay attention to when designing for smaller areas is the door. A sliding door that tucks into the wall takes up less room. Also, to find storage areas for bathroom necessities, check the plumbing and the studs in the walls. Sometimes you can go between them and create small shelves.
